How LGBTQ+ Communities Master Artificial Intelligence – Stories from Course Graduates

06.05.2025

Technology has no prejudices—only possibilities. This idea is embodied in the ALLIANCE.GLOBAL project teaching artificial intelligence fundamentals to members of LGBTQ+ communities. The first cohort of participants has already completed the Google AI Essentials course, and we’d like to share their stories.

Oleksandr from Kharkiv, who became an internally displaced person due to the full-scale invasion and currently lives in Poltava, didn’t allow circumstances to halt his development:

‘What impressed me most was how AI can simplify work—automate tasks, help with ideas, structure thoughts. I particularly enjoyed working with prompt examples and learning to find formulations that yield the most precise results.’

For Yurii from Kyiv, who runs a news website, the course became a breakthrough in his professional activities:

‘Previously I used Google Translate and DeepL. After completing the course, I created settings where AI switches to translator mode. I simply input some text and receive a correct translation that satisfies me 99 per cent of the time. Before this, translations required much more frequent editing.’

Oleksandra, a freelancer, emphasises the versatility of the knowledge gained:

‘I decided to take this course because artificial intelligence is essential for absolutely everyone in any profession—the future belongs to it. I received thorough foundational knowledge—an ideal foundation. Now I use AI both in my work and everyday life.’

What the Course Offers

Denys from Poltava shares his impressions of the content: ‘The most interesting part of the Google AI Essentials course for me was understanding the basic principles of how neural networks work—it’s like magic! Although the information is basic, it’s presented brilliantly, and the mentor and online meetings are absolutely fantastic!’

‘I especially enjoyed the Zoom meetings. Such a warm atmosphere, lots of understanding, support, exchange of thoughts and experiences, interesting tasks,’ shares Oleksandra.

Practical Application

Course participants are already integrating their knowledge into daily life and work processes.

Yurii explains: ‘Another case is when you need to add context to an article. You simply give AI the text and ask it to add some context for Ukrainian readers. In the future, I plan to create AI-generated images for website articles, so they maintain a consistent style.’

Oleksandr plans to ‘use AI for content creation, idea generation, and potentially for optimising more complex processes in the future.’

Advice for Future Participants

‘Don’t be afraid to experiment. Even if you haven’t encountered AI topics before—everything is explained simply and accessibly. This knowledge will certainly be valuable in the future,’ advises Oleksandr.

Denys adds: ‘I’d like to wish future participants not to fear new things, actively participate in discussions, and remember that every long journey begins with a small step! You’ll succeed!’

Oleksandra draws attention to the language aspect: ‘Learn English, as the training is conducted in this language. Automatic translation was very helpful, but if your English level needs improvement, you might face difficulties. On the other hand, everything is possible if you have the desire.’

Join New Cohorts

The ALLIANCE.GLOBAL AI training project within the Google AI Opportunity Fund continues. A new intake starts every two months, with eight cohorts of 25 participants planned in total. The training is completely free, and all participants receive necessary technical and psychological support.

Don’t postpone your future—technologies are changing the world today, and you can become part of these changes.

ALLIANCE.GLOBAL expresses gratitude to the Centre for Public Impact Europe and Google.org for supporting the project, making technological education accessible to LGBTQ+ communities in Ukraine.
